Ecstasy of St Theresa: Woman as the Numinous

Painting in process. I've been working on it here and there for the past two weeks. Not quite done yet, I want to push the impasto of the whites to the point of frosting. This is a painting pulled from the Catholic myth of St Theresa of Avila of recieved spiritual visions during the late 15th century. I find the way this myth combines spiritual ecstasy with bodily pleasure very intriguing. St Theresa is usually depicted (in the amazing Bernini sculpture and various paintings) as having a worldly orgasm as she experiences this spiritual vision from God. The combination of spirituality and sexuality is strong in this myth.
